The fragrance is inspired by “Portrait of Monsieur Seriziat” by Jacques-Louis David, one of the most renowned French painters. David was known for his politically themed paintings during the French Revolution and was imprisoned after the Thermidorian Reaction. His wife divorced him because he voted for the king’s death, but later, in 1796, she remarried him. Pierre Seriziat, a lawyer and the husband of the artist’s wife’s sister, is portrayed as a country gentleman in a composition that mirrors the style of English portraitists of that era. Seated on a rock where he has placed his clothes, he strikes a pose considered elegant. His coat and leather trousers are inspired by English fashion. While spontaneity seems absent, the artist’s primary intent was the same as with the portrait of Émilie Seriziat: to capture a moment of truth amidst the couple’s rural life. However, the artist shows a certain dedication to the character’s elegant side. The cloudy sky in the background is a rarity in David’s portraits.
